Hooks Book Events announced today a public discussion and book signing event with Dr. Paul Farmer, author of the new book, “Haiti After the Earthquake,” a riveting account of the recovery efforts following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Venue partner, the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, will host the event from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on September 12, 2011 at the Amphitheater. Tickets are available at https://hooksbookevents-paulfarmer.eventbrite.com/
Paul Farmer, M.D., Ph.D., is Kolokotrones University Professor at Harvard University and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and co-founder of Partners In Health. He also serves as UN Deputy Special Envoy for Haiti, under Special Envoy Bill Clinton. Farmer and his colleagues have pioneered novel, community-based treatment strategies that demonstrate the delivery of high-quality health care in resource-poor settings.
On January 12, 2010 a massive earthquake laid waste to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Within three days, Farmer arrived in the Haitian capital, along with a team of volunteers, to lend his services to the injured. In the book’s vivid narrative, Farmer describes the incredible suffering — and resilience — that he encountered in Haiti. Having worked in the country for nearly thirty years, he skillfully explores the social issues that made Haiti so vulnerable to the earthquake — the very issues that make it an “unnatural disaster.” “Haiti After the Earthquake,” will both inform and inspire readers to stand with the Haitian people against the profound economic and social injustices that formed the fault line for this disaster.
A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to Partners In Health, the non-profit organization that provides a preferential option for the poor in health care. Additional copies of “Haiti After the Earthquake,” will be available for purchase. Dr. Farmer will be signing books at the event.
